Yoga Retreats
For anyone who is new to yoga or not quite sure how it fits into one's life, the idea of a retreat — going away with some people we may or may not know, to an unfamiliar place with different beds, and food and then be expected to do lots of yoga — can be daunting.
What Makes It Great
Being in the company of like-minded, yoga loving people, without feeling that we have only an hour to achieve balance and bliss.
The opportunity to explore our bodies and step into a deeper inner awareness, away from the distractions of everyday life.
Time to learn and incorporate some of the subtle aspects of Yoga: philosophy, meditation, Sanskrit...
Taking a step forward in our practice to 'stretch' physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
The chance to set an intention: perhaps committing (or recommitting) to our yoga practice, evaluating our lives, getting over heartbreak, celebrating things that are going well, initiating changes.
Experiencing how yoga comes alive in nature. Being in a studio that looks out onto countryside. Or practicing on the grass, beach or patio!
The thrill of being in yoga class while someone else is preparing us a delicious meal.
And just the pleasure of a refreshing break, as social and interactive or solitary and introspective as we choose to make it.
What to Consider Ahead of Time
Being open to a new experience, just as we were the first time we unrolled a sticky mat.
If possible, taking a few classes with the instructor (me) before signing up. Or at least have a conversation and ask about the style of practice and intentions for the retreat.
Don't let the amount of yoga, which may be a lot more than you do at home, scare you off. There is a balance between active and restful practices and everything is optional.
